Summertime is upon us and we are definitely starting to feel the heat. Chinese medicine has many ways to balance out the environmental heat that we feel, including ways we can balance our body to make it feel overall less hot. Start with these and ask your acupuncturist if you have any questions.
- Avoid foods and drinks that are “hot” in nature and create heat in the body such as: coffee, spicy food, alcohol, and sugar. These also increase inflammation in our body adding to the feeling of heat.
- Make sure to stay hydrated – drinking at least half of your body weight in ounces per day (if you weigh 200 lbs, that’s 100 ounces of water per day). I like to add a sprinkle of high-quality salt and a squeeze of citrus to make an all-natural Gatorade (without all the added sugar).
- Some foods are cooling in nature and can help enhance the feeling of cooling off. Watermelon is a great one and
make sure to also eat the white part just before you get to the rind. Mint is also an amazing herb to alleviate the feeling of heat.
- Acupressure is also a great way to alleviate heat in the body. Pinching is the best way to stimulate these points to release heat or you could also rub for approximately 30 seconds. Governing Vessel (GV) -14 while being great at clearing heat and relieving fever, is also indicated for neck pain and cough. Large Intestine (LI) – 11 clears heat and is also indicated for tennis elbow and colds with a sore throat.
